Why Do We Need To Burp A baby?
What can happen if we don't burp a baby? Which position is best to place a baby while burping.
Are there various methods to burp a baby or does it depend on the baby. Do breastfed babies also need to be burped? What do you do if after 10 minutes of rubbing the baby's back nothing has happened, do you still need to rub? I appreciate your answers!!!

Burping A Baby Is Not Optional
by: Janet

Some mothers think that burping a baby is a tradition, no, it's not. It is very important to burp a baby after feedings, it helps excess air which was swallowed while feeding the baby. After the baby burps, the discomfort disappears right away.

Burping A baby has a Reason
by: yitty

Burping A baby soothes discomfort

The reason why we need to burp a baby is because they can swallow air when feeding which then becomes trapped in their little stomachs. The air in their stomach causes them discomfort, so burping them will help them excess the air to prevent them from being in agony.

Yes, there is more than one method for burping a baby.
  • The most common one is over your shoulder, chect up, and head resting on your shoulder. By rubbing gently the baby's back you help them burp to get the air out.

  • Another way of doing it is on your laps patting their back to help them burp.

  • There is one more popular method. Put the baby in a sitting position and rub his/her back. Baby should lean forward, the baby's chin should be on your hands while rubbing the back.

Every parent gets to know their child and figures out which methods suits their baby, and how comfortable they feel, that is what they use.

YEs, breastfed babies usually swallow less air than bottle fed so those babies need less burping. Every baby is different, some need more burping than others.

If your baby doesn't burp for 10 minutes, don't bother, your baby just doesn't need to burp.

It is a very good idea to use burp cloths to prevent milky stains. Some burps expel not just air but sometimes these burps are milky and cheesey and causes them to really become stained. So get yourself a burp cloth, the're really good!!!
