Traditionally baby showers are held in the last trimester in the mother's-to-be pregnancy stage, 6-8 weeks before the due date. Showers may also be held after the baby is born. Some people prefer rather to have a postpartum baby shower so they can get personalized baby gifts in the correct size and color. Another reason is because everyone can meet the newborn, who is actually a focal part of the party.

The mother-to-be should be the one to choose the guest list as it is her day. If the shower is to surprise her , a close relative or friend should help plan the list. Actually anyone who is close to the mom-to-be like cousins, friends, Grandmothers-to-be and other relatives are invited to help celebrate the new arrival.(Friends of dad usually don't attend the party, it depends on the father-to-be, if he prefers.)

Of course not. A baby shower is held to show love and support for the mom-to-be and the new baby. Every baby deserves a special welcome into our world. For a second or third baby, more practical unique baby gifts are given like, onsies, diapers, and toys. The family got already major gifts at their first baby's shower. Unless, of course the baby is of a different gender.

Baby showers for adopted children are usually given 2 months after baby is born. This is because adoption proceedings don't always go as planned and parents like to spend some time to bond with their new addition.

As guests arrive to the baby shower, they fill out envelopes with their names and addresses, and place them in a basket. Later on, the mom-to-be draws out an envelope for the winner of the door prize. The mom-to-be then can use the envelopes when mailing out her thank you notes later.
